July 29: Grand Teton: Two Ocean walk

Saturday, July 28, 2007: George’s 48th birthday!
George and I got up around 7:30 am, had coffee, and then headed over to the Colter visitor center to figure out some good hikes. In doing so, we discovered that our campsite is in walking distance to Jackson Lake. George walked back from the visitor center to figure out a right path to take from our sight. By 9:30 am, we started wing up the kids by cooking a pancake breakfast. Slowly, they started to appear from within the tent. Around 11:00, we headed off for a walk off the beaten path around the Two Ocean Lake. The women at the visitor center had said there was many moose back there and that a section of the trail was closed to a pair of nesting Bald Eagles. The lake and the surrounding meadows were absolutely beautiful. We hiked three miles to the far end of the lake and back, but no moose or bears were sighted. Through a pair of binoculars, we were able to see the Bald Eagle sitting on his/her nest across the lake. After our walk, we drove over to Signal Mountain Summit to check out the view. Along the way, we saw a sow Mouse with her calf in the Snake River. As we were driving up the Signal Mountain Summit Road, we spotted three Elk in the woods. Once on top we took in an expanse of the Snake River valley and views over the Grand Tenton. Since we were at a high elevation, our cell phones worked, so George was able to check his birthday messages and call a few folks back.
Once back at the campsite, around 6:00 pm, George and kids walked over to the Jackson Lake for a dip, while Laura got dinner underway. We grilled up some yummy steak and potatoes. We could find a cake so we had cookies and a few gifts.
